BREAKING: Umeoji becomes Zenith Bank’s first female GMD

Zenith Bank Plc made headlines on Tuesday with the announcement of Dr. Adaora Umeoji as its incoming Group Managing Director, slated to assume office on June 1, 2024. The news, revealed in a statement penned by Company Secretary Michael Otu and filed with the Nigerian Exchange Limited, marks a significant milestone for both the bank and Nigeria’s financial sector.

Dr. Umeoji’s appointment marks a historic moment as she becomes the first female to ascend to the position of Group Managing Director since the bank’s inception. Previously serving as the Deputy Managing Director since October 28, 2016, she boasts nearly three decades of banking expertise, with 26 years dedicated to Zenith Bank.

Dr. Umeoji’s academic pedigree is equally impressive. A graduate of the prestigious Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Programme and an alumnus of Columbia Business School with a Certificate in the Global Banking Program, she holds multiple degrees from esteemed institutions. Her educational journey includes a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Jos, bachelor’s degrees in accounting and law with first-class honors from Baze University, Abuja, a Master of Laws from the University of Salford, UK, and an MBA from the University of Calabar.

Additionally, she earned a doctorate in business administration from Apollos University, USA, and completed a Certificate in Economics for Business from MIT Sloan School of Management, USA. Dr. Umeoji has further honed her skills through various management programs globally, including the Strategic Thinking and Management program at Wharton Business School, USA.

Dr. Umeoji’s ascent to the helm of Zenith Bank not only adds her to the esteemed roster of female bank Managing Directors in Nigeria but also solidifies her position as the first female MD of the institution. Her appointment reflects the bank’s commitment to diversity and inclusion at the highest levels of leadership.
