NSCDC arrests 77 illegal miners in Ogun

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) says at least 77 illegal miners were arrested across Ogun State in 2023

The State Commandant of the NSCDC, David Ojelabi, disclosed this during an interview in Abeokuta, the state capital.

Ojelabi also hinted the command in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel have written letters to mining groups in the state and warned against stockpiling explosives in the residential areas.

This, he said, followed the Ibadan explosion blamed on illegal miners’ explosive devices.

He expressed the command’s commitment to tame activities of illegal miners with help of critical stakeholders.

“We have a unit called Mines and Steel unit working with Federal ministry

“The unit is working to tackle the menace, working with Ogun and FG ministry to sensitise and call them to order

“One of the things we have done together with the Federal mines unit in Ogun State is to write a letter to all the mining groups in the state, informing them on the dangers of keeping all those explosive devices within a community.

“Apart from that we want to take it upon ourselves, by sensitising members of the public on the havoc of keeping all those devices at home or among the people, the implication if anything happens to them, the household or the community as a whole. So, sensitisation is part of it apart from the fact that we have written them already so that we will not have occurence of what happened in Oyo State, in Ogun State,” Ojelabi said.

He blamed the easy access to explosives by the illegal miners on porous borders, which he said many of them used in importing explosive devices.

“It is like asking how armed robbers are getting their rifles and so on. Wherever you have 12 sitting together, possibly you have one Judas among them.

“So, because of the number of unmanned borders, I mean porous borders or illegal borders, they can easily import those things illegally into the country and make use of them.

“We will keep on sensitizing them on the implication of having access to those items illegally. They are commiting crime in that way and if they are caught storing all those devices in illegal places, it is another offence not to talk of when these things explode,” he said.
