Ogun gives street traders 21-day ultimatum to vacate Lagos Ibadan expressway


As part of the government’s efforts to restore environmental sanity along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, the Ogun state governor has issued all illegal street vendors on road setback a 21-day ultimatum to vacate. 

Governor Dapo Abiodun noted that the shanties of this street vendors including those at Kara, Isheri Warewa would be dismantled  in order to properly clean up the axis and prepare it for the federal government’s reconstruction of the motorway.

In a meeting with community leaders at the palace of the Olofin of Isheri, Oba Sulaiman Adekunle Bamgbade in Isheri, the governor in a message read by his Commissioner for the Environment, Ola Oresanya explained that the decision was made after several warnings and  notices for them to move to government approved markets failed.

He continued by saying that in addition to the environmental nuisance caused, most of their shantytowns pose a security danger to members of the public as they also serve as hideouts for drug dealers and street urchins who rob defenceless bystanders in broad daylight of their goods. 

“So my government will not wait and allow a small group of individuals in the name of trading which is outside approved markets put the safety and health of our decent people at risk”Governor Abiodun added.ย

In response, Oba Bamgbola on behalf of the community leaders pledged the support of residents to the government’s efforts at curbing the axis of the menace of street traders.
