The Ogun State government on Wednesday distributed eco-friendly, reusable sanitary pads to selected secondary school girls in the state.
The state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Adijat Adeleye, during a distribution exercise at the African Church Grammar School, Ita-Eko, Abeokuta, stated that the well-being of girl-child was one of the priorities of Governor Dapo Abiodun-led administration hence the initiative.
She maintained that the sanitary pads were affordable, comfortable, and convenient to use considering the economic challenges in the country.
The commissioner reassured that the Ministry would continue to prioritize teenage wellness for them to serve as role models and achieve exceptional heights in society.
“I want you to know that the present administration under the leadership of Prince Dapo Abiodun is passionate about the wellbeing of girl-child, that is why he is giving you all necessary attention to keep you safe and I believe that with the distribution of this reusable pads, there will be relief on money spent on purchasing them monthly’’, she said.
She, however, advised them to ensure routine cleaning of the product to prevent contracting germs that could cause diseases, illnesses, and bad odour, pointing out that personal hygiene would boost their morale, social interaction, health status and psyche.
In her contribution, Mrs. Ayotunde Lawal, Special Adviser to the Governor on Women Affairs, urged the girls to keep their surroundings tidy and take good care of their sanitary towels, emphasising that “cleanliness is next to godliness.”
Earlier, Mrs. Elizabeth Famoroti, the principal of African Church Grammar School, and Mrs. Yemisi Akinda, the principal of Baptist Girls College, said that the distribution of sanitary towels was appropriate because it would save money on disposable ones and warn students to maintain good hygiene.
Appreciating the government for the gesture, two of the students, Glory Olusola and Waliat Dauda, expressed joy over the initiative, promising to imbibe the culture of cleanliness to enjoy good health.
