The Ogun State government on Friday announced a N50 million reward for information leading to the capture of Taiwo Oyekanmi’s killers.
Oyekanmi, the state’s director of finance and administration on November 29 was shot by group of armed thieves who ambushed a bullion vehicle attached to him carrying government funds in Abeokuta.
According to information obtained by our correspondent, the government accountant was returning to the Oke Mosan office after obtaining an undisclosed sum of money from the Abeokuta branches of Fidelity and Sterling banks when the gunmen ambushed the home-made bullion van carrying him and the cash.
About five hooded gunmen are said to have taken over the bullion van as it was crossing the overhead bridge at Kuto, and they then started shooting at the accountant.
More information was obtained indicating that the thieves, armed with sledge hammers, burst through the door of the bullion van and stole the government’s funds.
Oyekanmi was rushed to the State Hospital in Ijaye, Abeokuta, where he reportedly died.
Remains of the deceased had already been buried with Governor Dapo Abiodun giving security agencies a marching order to smoke out the killers.
But on Friday, the government made a public announcement, placing a bounty of N50m on the killers.
The state government promised to treat any information submitted with the utmost confidentially in an announcement signed by the secretary Tokunbo Talabi.
It reads “The Ogun State Government has announced a reward of fifty (50) million naira for anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the killers of the state’s Director of Finance and Administration (DFA), Mr. Taiwo Oyekanmi, on 29th November, 2023 in Abeokuta.
