Acknowledging the adverse effects of economic hardship faced by parents, Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo, has appealed to State-owned tertiary institutions to review downward, the recently hiked tuition fees.
Oluomo stated this in response to a submission made by Hon. Lukman Adeleye, the Minority Leader and member representing Odogbolu State Constituency, who brought up the matter under Personal Explanation during a planary session at the Assembly Complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The Speaker noted that it was important for the Heads of the tertiary institutions that it was critical for the heads of higher education to demonstrate greater empathy and compassion by allowing the new fees to have a human face in order to prevent the students from being placed in a difficult situation.
He clarified that even while the high rate of inflation may make it necessary for the institutions to raise their fees in order to meet their urgent needs, the rates nevertheless needed to be reasonable.
Earlier in his presentation, Hon. Adeleye reported on the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) students’ recent protests in response to the management’s announcement of an increase in school feesand urged the Assembly to look into the matter in order to ensure that the increased fees were reduced.
