Banks, others shun NLC, TUC strike in Ogun

Some commercial banks, schools, and private organizations in Abeokuta, Ogun state have shunned the directives of the labour congress to stay out of work.

The labour’s indefinite strike action came despite an injunction by the National Industrial Court, NIC, in Abuja, restraining National labour congress and Trade Union Congress alongside their affiliates from embarking on any industrial action.

The strike was to protest the battering of the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, and others in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1.

Ogunwatch observed that in banks workers were seen attending to customers.

Some pupils from government schools were also seen going back  home to follow the directive.

Also the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) complied with NLC and TUC directive as the Abeokuta office of the company was shutdown.

Speaking in an interview with journalists, NLC Chairman in Ogun state, Hammed Ademola Benco he said “ It is not possible for us to pull out of the strike because it is a national directive and as at yesterday between 2 and 5, the joint NEC was conducted and it was from that meeting that it was resolved unanimously that we should embark on indefinite strike which commenced 12 mid night and we are here and we have been going around to ensure that there is compliance and the way I’m seeing things, the compliance is encouraging, there is no way by which we can pull out as a body because it is a joint decision from the national leadership.

“We have circulated different letters to all affiliates and they have started calling their members to stay at home because this particular strike is stay at home action, it is not the type of strike that we will be forcing them out of offices, it is stay at home action, that is the style of this strike and if paraventure we have some people that attended to official duties I’m very sure that with time they will eventually see the reason why they have to stay at home.

“We are not forcing anybody, the instruction is a stay at home action, so we did not even expect anybody to go to work” He concluded.
