Sagamu Killing: Ogun Assembly urges DSS to  release detained member

Concerned about the continued detention of Hon. Damilare Muhammed Bello, the member representing Sagamu 1 State Constituency the Ogun State House of Assembly passed a resolution requesting his release.

The lawmaker was detained by the Department of State Security for allegedly providing shelter to the six fleeing suspected cultists who were connected in the four days of clashes among rival cult groups in Sagamu, which has claimed eight lives.

The resolution was passed by voice vote at a plenary presided over by Speaker Olakunle Oluomo at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, following a motion moved by the Majority Leader, Yusuf Sheriff, seconded by the Minority Leader, Lukman Adeleye, and supported by other members.

Earlier in their arguments, the members urged for the imprisoned lawmaker’s release on bail, noting that the security service could continue with its investigation.

The members argued in favour of the detained lawmaker’s release on bail by pointing out that the security service could carry on with its investigation without preventing him from fulfilling his constitutional obligation to represent his constituents.

They noted that since the allegations against him were all bailable, administrative bail might be given to the congressman instead of keeping him in detention for more than two weeks, allowing him to continue serving his constituents while the inquiry is ongoing.

In another development, the State Rural and Semi Urban Integration and Development Bill, 2023 scaled first reading on the floor of the House as the Clerk/Head of Legislative Service, Deji Adeyemo took the long title of the bill before the State lawmakers.
