The Ogun state police command have arrested three officers for alleged armed robbery in the Ijebu Ode area of the state.
Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu on Tuesday paraded the suspects, including 26 others for various criminal offenses, at the command’s headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta.
The arrested officers are Inspector Taiwo Kolawole (AP/No 341113), Inspector John Ogbe (AP/No 309292), Corporal Idowu Sunday (No 513707), all attached to Ijebu-Ife division and a civilian, Adesiyan Mathew, who served as the driver.
The incident was reported by Kashimao Emmanuel on January 12, 2024, stating that four armed men, posing as police officers, demanded his phone while driving his Toyota Venza car. Despite initially refusing, Emmanuel complied when one of the assailants fired a shot into the air. They took him away, transferred three hundred and twelve thousand naira from his account to an Opay account (no. 9097829766), and released him in Ijebu-Ode.
Upon receiving the report, the DPO called the Opay account of a POS operator, delaying the funds and leading to the arrest of Corporal Idowu Sunday at a POS shop in Ibadan garage. His accomplices, Inspector Taiwo Kolawole and Inspector John Ogbe, along with driver Adesiyan Mathew, were subsequently apprehended.
Recovered items include a Type 06 rifle with breach no. 23286, 10 rounds of live ammunition, an AK47 rifle with breach no. 804274, 6 rounds of live ammunition, and a Toyota Camry car with registration number NO APP 684 DX.
Commissioner Alamutu disclosed that two additional complainants had come forward, identifying the suspects as having previously robbed them in a similar manner.
He noted that the three officers have been tried in an orderly room, discharged, and will soon face charges in court.
