Tunde Onakoya, a renowned chess player and teacher who recently broke the Guinness World Record with a 58-hour chess marathon, has been appointed as the sports ambassador for Ogun State.
Since breaking this record, Onakoya has received numerous recognitions. The Lagos State Government warmly received him and declared their support for his mission. Hailing from Ago Iwoye in Ogun State, Onakoya has been celebrated for his numerous achievements in the country and for his contributions to humanity through his “Chess in the Slum” initiative, which aims to get kids off the streets and teach them chess.
The Ogun State Government has also announced that Onakoya’s commitment and leadership in promoting chess in the state will be acknowledged through the “Tunde Onakoya Prize,” which will be awarded to competition winners. The state governor took to his Instagram account to announce: “Today, we appointed him as our State Sports Ambassador as Ogun State prepares to host the National Sports Festival in nine months, where chess will be featured. In his honor, we are launching the Ogun State Chess Competition, which Mr. Onakoya will design.”
