Ogun CJ frees 3 inmates

As part of its efforts to decongest correctional facilities across the Ogun state, the state’s Chief Judge, Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu has granted amnesty to three inmates.

The trio Joseph Apan, Nureni Oladosu and Babatunde Fagbayi were released during Prison Visit and Jail delivery exercise, at the Ilaro Correctional Centre, Ilaro.

The Hon. Justice Dipeolu, accompanied by Judges, Director of Public Prosecution, management and officials, including the Controller and Assistant Controller, Correctional Centre, lamented over the dire conditions plaguing correctional facilities.

She noted that  the exercise would help decongest the facility adding that they  cannot afford to have deaths due to overcrowding.

“The conditions here at the correctional centre have not improved. It is evident that overcrowding is rampant, even without official statistics. This overcrowding particularly concerns those awaiting trial, as they suffer without having been found guilty”.

The Chief Judge promised prompt action to combat decongestion, pointing out that although courts strive to expedite cases, the core cause of congestion must be addressed.

She also mentioned that some people had been awaiting trial since 2018, which she deemed intolerable.

In his remarks, Controller of the Correctional Centre, Mr. Saliu Adepoju, thanked the Chief Judge and her staff for for their efforts to protect judicial standards.
