Armed robbers break into hostels, rape TASUED students

Four female students of the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, have been reportedly raped  by some alleged armed robbers.

Ogunwatch learnt that the hoodlums carried out the heinous act early on Tuesday morning after breaking into hostels in the Abapawa neighbourhood, which is located away from the university.

Visiting the victims, at the state hospital in Ijebu-Ode before being transferred to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu, the state deputy governor, Engr Noimot Salako-Oyedele alongside the Commissioner of Police, Alamutu Abiodun, and Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology, Prof Abayomi Arigbabu assured that all necessary steps will be taken to apprehend the perpetrators.

Emphasizing that the perpetrators will not go unpunished,she pledged to provide the victims with the necessary medical, moral, and emotional support to help them recover from the trauma and resume normal lives free from any form of stigma.

According to Oyedele, the state government was notified by the local hgovernment chairman of the unfortunate incident that occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, October 24th, 2023, and immediately on the governor’s instructions, security operatives led by the area commander of the Nigeria police force were dispatched to the scene of the incident.

She stated that the commissioner of police had personally visited the scene of the crime when it was first reported and was working tirelessly to ensure that the perpetrators are captured and face the full force of the law.

Also speaking at a meeting with the University management team, representatives of the student body, the commissioner for Education Science and Technology, Prof Abayomi Arigbabu as well as Commissioner of Police, She emphasised the importance of preventing future occurrences because it was one of the worst crimes against humanity.ย 

” I am on a fact finding mission to establish what happened and what could be done to support the victims immediately and subsequently, apprehend the criminals and of course, prevent such a thing happening again” she said.

The deputy governor also charged the school administration to build stakeholder engagements with the concerned community, the police, and the students in order to put in place procedures that will ensure the safety of the lives and property of the students who live off campus.

Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, the state commissioner for education, science, and technology, described the incident’s news as “extremely disheartening” and assured the student union representatives who had been wronged that the government would do everything in its power to catch the culprits.ย  ย 

The chairman of the Odogbolu local government, Hon. Ladejobi Adebayo, also praised Abiodun’s responsive leadership and assured the school’s administration and students that the government would not give up until justice was done. 

In his remarks, the state Commissioner for Police, Mr. Abiodun Alamutu, expressed his deepest sympathies to the victims of the heinous incident, attributing it to a lack of coordination among the security personnel in the neighbourhoods where students live and promising that those responsible would be brought to justice.

Meanwhile in his opening remarks, Tai Solarin University of Education’s Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Adekunle Adeogun, stated that the school administration was upset about the incident, adding  that since the incident occurred, the administration has done everything in its power to support the victims and has appealed to the state government for additional assistance to prevent future occurrences. 

Comrade Akinjetan Hamed, the president of the student union at TASUED, expressed his displeasure with the incident, he maintained the school’s administration needed to put in place a robust security system to prevent future incidents and give private hostel owners instructions to implement adequate security measures in their respective establishments.
