Tuition hike: protest continues as TASUED Mgt plans N10,000 reduction

As agitation against fee hike continues, Tasued students on Wednesday resumed a fresh protest, blocking the Sagamu-Ore expressway.

As previously reported by Ogunwatch, the university administration increased the tuition fees on Monday due to the country’s economic conditions.

It was gathered that the fees of returning students was increased from N76,500 to N180,000, while the fee of those offering education courses was increased from N90,500 to N230,000 and those studying for single honours are to pay N240,000.

The student who staged the peaceful protest on Monday expressed dissatisfaction over this hike.

The registrar of TASUED, Dapo Oke, had on Monday commended the students for their composed protest and gave the assurance that the maturity level would be taken into consideration in the consultation process.

Sadly, the management of the institution directed students to proceed on end of session holiday for the 2022/2023 academic calendar.

In a statement released on Wednesday and signed by its Registrar, Mr. Dapo Oke, the college ordered all students to leave the campus immediately and advised parents to recall their wards back home.

The statement reads partly, “The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Oluwole Banjo FWISON, FASN, FAIMP, dFSIN on behalf of the University Senate has declared end of session holiday for the 2022/2023 session.

“All Students are directed to vacate the University premises immediately pending the period when the new academic session would commence.

However, a source, present in the management’s meeting with the student body disclosed that, the management claim they could only deduct N10,000 from the price.

“ Do you know what the management said yesterday when we were at a round table meeting with them?

“ They were like they can only remove 10k each, we disagreed totally and we fixed another meeting for tomorrow. And because of what they said, that was why today’s exam was canceled.

“ If you were there you would know it can come back to exactly 76,500

“Only for us to see that they went on holiday today. Now will tomorrow’s meeting with the management hold again? No!

“Can you see the clear game the management is playing against us ? he asked.

“ I just pity the freshers the most. This people are ready to take another jamb if the money is not reduced and staylites are ready to drop out of school, he added.

The student however appealed to the state government to show concerns in the affairs of the institution.
