In a press briefing held at Aso Villa, Abuja, on Thursday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, declared that the Federal Government emphasized the nation’s capability to be self-sufficient in food production and even become a net exporter.
This announcement followed a meeting between President Bola Tinubu and the 36 state governors.
Minister Idris highlighted the decision taken by the government to halt food importation, asserting that Nigeria’s agricultural potential could meet its food demands and contribute to global exports.
He disclosed the commitment of governors to collaborate with the President in boosting investments in the agricultural sector, encompassing both crop production and livestock development.

President Tinubu, addressing the pressing issue of high food prices, ruled out the establishment of a price control board and rejected the approval of food importation. He assured support for farmers through initiatives aimed at increasing food production.
The meeting, attended by key figures such as the Vice President, National Security Adviser, Inspector-General of Police, Director-General of the DSS, and various ministers, addressed concerns over nationwide protests regarding the escalating cost of living and food commodities.
Despite the challenges, President Tinubu expressed confidence in steering the country out of the food crisis.
He emphasized the government’s commitment to implementing livestock development and management plans, including initiatives like dairy farming, to further enhance food availability in the nation.
