Man allegedly kills mother, sister, bury them in shallow grave

In a gruesome and tragic incident, the Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a young man identified as Somadina Orji, who allegedly murdered his mother, Mrs. Charity Orji, and his sister, Miss Ukamaka Orji. The victims were later buried in a shallow grave in the family’s backyard in Umuagu Inyi, Oji River Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The horrifying crime took place on Monday, December 4, 2023, with reports indicating that the suspect, Somadina Orji, hails from Igboariam in Anambra State. The motive behind the shocking act is believed to be linked to the suspect’s alleged involvement in drug-related activities, leading to conflicts with his family.

According to community leader Mr. Ben Obi, the tension in the family had been escalating in recent weeks. Somadina had reportedly clashed with his younger brother, prompting his mother, Mrs. Charity Orji, to intervene and seek help from their kinsmen. She sought assistance in removing Somadina from the house as she feared for her younger son’s safety.

Tragically, the situation took a sinister turn when Charity, after returning from a condolence visit at Akpugoeze, was killed by her son upon her arrival in the afternoon. The younger brother, suspecting foul play after his mother went missing, raised an alarm. Upon interrogation by villagers, Somadina confessed to killing both his mother and his missing sister.

The late Mrs. Charity Orji, described as a hardworking woman who sold fufu to support her family, tragically lost her life in the hands of her son. Community leaders, including Mr. Ben Obi and coordinating president general Mr. Ejike Tasie, have condemned the act and called on the government to intervene to prevent such incidents in the future.
