In a significant development, the Defence Headquarters announced on Sunday the successful rescue of abducted pupils and teachers from LEA School Kuriga in the Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna, within Zamfara State.
The abduction occurred on March 7, 2024, when suspected terrorists kidnapped approximately 287 pupils and teachers from the school, taking them into the forest. Subsequently, the abductors demanded a ransom of N1 billion for their release, setting a deadline of March 27, 2024, for the payment.
In a statement issued by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj Gen. Edward Buba, it was revealed that the victims, numbering 137 in total (comprising 76 females and 61 males), were rescued in the early hours of Sunday by the troops, with support from local authorities and government agencies. These rescued individuals will be conveyed to Kaduna and handed over to the state government.
Maj Gen. Buba reiterated the military’s commitment to leaving no stone unturned in ensuring the rescue of all hostages. The successful operation marks a significant breakthrough in the efforts to combat terrorism and secure the safety of civilians, particularly schoolchildren and educators.

The rescue operation in Kaduna comes shortly after troops also rescued 16 pupils, known as Almajiris, along with a woman who had been taken hostage in Gada LGA of Sokoto State. These victims have been handed over to the Sokoto State Government.
Maj Gen. Buba emphasized that these recent successes underscore the determination of the armed forces to rescue kidnapped victims across the country. Additionally, efforts are being intensified to apprehend those responsible for the killing of soldiers in Delta State.
The Defence Headquarters assured the public of ongoing efforts to track down terrorists and bring them to justice, reaffirming the commitment of the armed forces to safeguarding the lives and security of all citizens.
