In a heartbreaking incident on Christmas Day, two siblings, 26-year-old Femi Adegboyega and 23-year-old Ibukun Adegboyega, lost their lives to drowning while enjoying an evening swim at Ibeshe Beach in the Amuwo-Odofin area of Lagos State.
The tragic incident occurred at approximately 6:00 pm, as the siblings, who resided in the FESTAC Town area of the state, were swimming alongside friends on the popular beach.
Eyewitnesses on the scene recounted the sudden and shocking turn of events. Seun, who claimed to have been with the victims before the tragedy unfolded, expressed his disbelief, saying, “We were swimming together on the beach. To be honest, I do not understand how it happened because we were together, and all of a sudden they both drowned. I wonder how their parents will feel now because they are brothers, and I also feel terrible because we could not help.”
Despite efforts by friends and local divers to rescue the siblings, their attempts proved futile. Femi, another eyewitness, revealed, “All efforts by his friends and local divers to rescue them from Ibeshe Beach did not work. The divers searched the beach, but their bodies have not been found. We swam for a long time but to no avail. I strongly believe their bodies will be found. We informed the police about it quickly before the situation escalated. I pray their bodies will be found. I pray everything works well.”
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the tragic incident. Hundeyin disclosed that divers had been engaged to locate the bodies, and an ongoing investigation was in progress. The deceased’s family has been notified of the unfortunate event.
“Divers have been employed to locate the bodies, and the family of the deceased are already informed, and the investigation is ongoing,” stated Hundeyin.
As the community mourns the loss of these young lives, authorities are working tirelessly to recover the bodies and shed light on the circumstances surrounding this devastating incident.
