Health worker reportedly takes own life after boyfriend’s death in Adamawa

In a heartbreaking turn of events, Florence Vandi, a 22-year-old health worker attached to the Primary Health Care Centre in Girei Local Government Area (LGA) of Adamawa State, has reportedly taken her own life. The tragic incident occurred on December 12, 2023, following the death of her boyfriend, Nuhu Boniface, who passed away while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Florence, a resident of Viniklang in Girei LGA and an indigene of Michika LGA, allegedly consumed a local substance suspected to be the toxic insecticide known as Sniper. The Adamawa State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, released a statement confirming the unfortunate incident.

“The deceased took the unfortunate decision a few hours after the death of her boyfriend, Nuhu Boniface, who died while receiving treatment at the hospital. Investigation further revealed that until her death, Florence was a health worker attached to Girei Primary Health Care Centre,” stated SP Nguroje.

Expressing sorrow over the tragic event, the Commissioner of Police, CP Afolabi Babatola, urged the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. He emphasized the importance of reporting any suspicious activities in their neighborhoods to the police.

The circumstances surrounding Florence’s decision to end her life remain under investigation as authorities seek to understand the factors that may have led to this devastating incident. The entire community mourns the loss of a dedicated health worker, and the police are committed to ensuring a thorough and comprehensive inquiry into the matter.
