Polish national Lukasz Szpunar made headlines as he bravely stood in a box filled with ice for an astonishing four hours and two minutes, shattering the previous record by an impressive 50 minutes.
To achieve this feat, he had to have his entire body submerged in the icy depths, with only his head and neck exposed, clad only in swimming trunks.
Despite the freezing conditions, Szpunar was prepared, wearing a mouthguard to protect his teeth from the biting cold. “At the beginning, it was uncomfortable,” he admitted, “but that feeling slowly faded, only to return with a vengeance towards the end.”
Throughout the intense attempt, safety stewards closely monitored his body temperature and consciousness. After surpassing the four-hour mark, Szpunar was finally lifted out of the ice-filled box.

Szpunar’s motivation for this icy challenge? His love for what he calls “walruses,” a term he uses to describe cold-exposure enthusiasts like himself. “I wanted to test myself this time by actually sitting in the ice itself,” he explained.
For Szpunar, extreme challenges are a way to “feel alive.” In addition to his ice endurance feat, he has also conquered four of Poland’s highest mountain peaks, all while wearing nothing but shorts.
Beyond his personal challenges, Szpunar is also a co-organizer of the ‘Lake of Angels’ campaign. This initiative sees him taking a dip in Lake Tarnobrzeg once a month at sunrise, with all proceeds from the event going to the House of Angels Hospice for children with cancer.
