Justice Nyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja has affirmed the validity of Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State’s National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate. During the judgment delivered on Monday, Justice Ekwo stated that the evidence presented in court confirmed that Governor Mbah was initially mobilized for service in 2001 and completed it in 2003.
The court further noted that Governor Mbah had received permission from the NYSC to attend the Nigeria Law School during his service and was reinstated into the NYSC in 2003. Justice Ekwo also criticized the NYSC for not pursuing forgery charges against the governor if they truly believed he possessed a fraudulent NYSC certificate, pointing out that the evidence of his service at the law firm of Udeh was unchallenged.
Justice Ekwo concluded that the NYSC had acted in bad faith and deemed their actions as mischievous. Consequently, the court found the Director General and the NYSC liable for misrepresenting material facts and awarded N5 million in damages against them.
