EFCC arrest over 60 OAU Students

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), numbering over sixty, in Ile-Ife, Osun State, during a raid on Monday morning.

The anti-graft agency carried out the operation, which targeted two off-campus hostels in Ife. The students and their vehicles were subsequently transported to the EFCC’s Ibadan office for further questioning.

A source close to the OAU’s Students’ Union President, Akinremi Abass, confirmed the incident, stating that the union leadership is currently at the EFCC’s office in Ibadan to gather more information regarding the early morning operation.

The news of the arrests sparked outrage among students and social media users. Hassanat, a student, expressed her anger on her WhatsApp status, saying, “In a sane country, these kidnappers calling themselves ‘law enforcement officers’ won’t even have the nerve to try this rubbish in the first place, and if they did, they would face the music.

“How do you just decide to go and abduct students from their hostels in the middle of the night? What is the rationale behind this madness?”

Other students of the institution have continue to call out the agency, using X, formerly Twitter, for unprofessionally carrying out the arrests.

The EFCC is yet to release an official statement regarding the operation or provide information on the charges, if any, against the detained students.
