adminIn memory of his late son, Gbemiga Abiodun, who passed away six years ago, Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun has established a Scholarship Award programme for 550 low-income children in the state’s Remo Federal Constituency.
The scholarships are available to students in vocational and postsecondary institutions as well as basic and secondary schools.ย
All of the schools in the scholarship’s coverage region received awards.

Prince Abiodun remarked at the launch of the Gbemiga Abiodun Education Scholarship Award in Iperu, Ikenne Local Government Area, that the scheme will ensure that outstanding kids and those whose parents cannot afford to educate them have access to great education.
According to him, the number of beneficiaries will rise to 1000 in the following year, which will be the bare minimum at any given time.
He further vowed that the scholarship would be extended to the state’s other federal constituencies for maximum distribution.
“It is against this backdrop that my family came up with a scholarship scheme called GBEMIGA ABIODUN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD, in memory of our son, Gbemiga Abiodun, which is strictly for indigent learners of Public Primary, Secondary Schools, Technical College and Tertiary Institutions, as well as Special Needs Learners within Ikenne, Remo North, and Sagamu Local Government Areas, to provide support to selected learners who are from the aforementioned local government areas of Ogun State.
“The Award is in two phases. The first phase is to be a Scholarship Award, designed for indigent and brilliant students while its alternative form; the second phase will be a Bursary Award for in-need but not necessarily brilliant indigent students whose chances of upward socio-economic mobility are probable with bursary support.
“This Scholarship award is designed for a period of three (3) years and within the age bracket of 6-25, and selection will be determined by the State Ministry of Education Science and Technology, using the Cumulative Promotion Examination Result obtainable from the OGSERA platform while the beneficiaries for tertiary institutions were recommended by their respective institutions.”
The governor described education as the only path to a future of prosperity, development, and peaceful coexistence, noting that the programme was designed to commemorate Gbemiga Abiodun’s impactful and eventful life and all that he stood for while alive, adding that the deceased lived a life of selflessness, consistency, and scholarship.
He stated that Gbemiga, also known as DJ Olu, had a lifelong love for sound teaching, which he followed until his death on October 7, 2017.
Prince Abiodun urged the scheme’s beneficiaries to make the most of it in order to improve their lot, adding it was the greatest way his family could keep the deceased’s legacy alive.
The governor’s wife, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun, said in her introductory remarks that the initiative aims to improve the lives of the beneficiaries and their parents, particularly during these difficult times, and she expressed hope that the scheme will succeed in its goal of providing relief to the benefited families.
Giving an overview of the scheme, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Science, and Technology, stated that the scholarship is wholly funded by the Dapo Abiodun family.
He explained that 200 students from public primary schools would receive N50,000 each for educational materials, 200 students from public secondary schools would receive N100,000 for educational materials, and 100 students from tertiary institutions would receive N250,000 each for educational needs.
Arigbabu went on to say that a special account would be set up for recipients at primary and secondary schools, which would be disbursed by their head teachers and principals, while those in university institutions would be given their checks personally.
