Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has criticized the practice of paying pensions to former governors and their deputies as “outrageous” and “daylight robbery.” He lauded Governor Alex Otti of Abia State for his bold move in repealing the law supporting such payments.
Obasanjo made these remarks on Friday during a visit to Governor Otti’s residence in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia State. Expressing his appreciation for Otti’s courage, Obasanjo expressed hope that other governors would follow suit in repealing similar laws in their states.
The former President voiced his concerns, stating, “What sort of leadership allows former governors to enjoy lavish pensions while ordinary citizens remain unpaid? It’s unacceptable. Otti’s decision to end this rascality deserves commendation.”
He congratulated Otti for his resilience in attaining the governorship position and emphasized the importance of addressing infrastructural development in the state. Obasanjo encouraged Otti to remain steadfast despite facing criticism, stating that effective leadership coupled with infrastructure would propel the state towards progress.
Acknowledging Abia State’s potential for growth, Obasanjo highlighted the industrious nature of the people in the South-East region. He emphasized the need for supportive leadership to harness this potential fully.
In response, Governor Otti reiterated his commitment to infrastructural development, particularly in Aba. He expressed gratitude for Obasanjo’s support in repealing the pension law, emphasizing that leadership should prioritize serving the people over personal gain.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Ondo State chapter of the Trade Union Congress, Mr. Clement Fatuwase, commended Otti’s decision, calling it a step in the right direction. Fatuwase urged other governors to emulate Otti and end the practice of awarding life pensions to former governors and deputies.
The move by Governor Otti to repeal the law on pensions for ex-governors and deputies has sparked a conversation on responsible governance and fiscal accountability across Nigeria, with citizens and stakeholders calling for similar actions in other states.
