Explosion shakes Rivers Assembly, amid plot to impeach governor

In a turn of events, an explosion rattled the Rivers State House of Assembly complex late on Sunday evening.

This incident unfolded against a backdrop of alleged efforts by certain lawmakers to initiate the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Reports suggest that unidentified arsonists hurled an explosive device into the complex at approximately 9:25 pm, sparking a destructive fire within the building.

While the spokesperson for the state police command, Grace Iringe-Koko, remained unavailable for comment, a senior police officer, on condition of anonymity, confirmed the occurrence to our correspondent.

Tragically, numerous properties within the assembly chamber bore the brunt of the damage. The anonymous police officer insinuated that this act was politically motivated, saying, “Yes, it is true.

The fire erupted around 9:30 pm or so. Fortunately, it has been extinguished by the timely arrival of firefighters. It appears to be linked to political tensions.”

Certain lawmakers in the state legislature had orchestrated a plan to oust the House leader, Eddison Ehie, as a prelude to Governor Fubara’s potential removal, a report by The Punch claims.

It is believed that the House leader had been obstructing efforts to depose Fubara.

Also, reports have it that there is heavy security presence as the police and other law enforcement agencies had taken control of the complex.

Approximately 17 security vehicles and an Armoured Personnel Carrier were strategically stationed at the entrance and its surroundings, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
