Fatal tanker explosion engulfs East-West road in Rivers State

A devastating tanker explosion along the neglected Eleme axis of the East-West Road in Rivers State has resulted in extensive destruction, including the loss of lives and the destruction of numerous vehicles and goods.

The incident occurred on Friday night when a tanker collided with another heavy-duty vehicle, triggering a massive blaze and explosion that engulfed over 50 vehicles.

Videos and witness accounts on social media depict the harrowing scene, with some individuals expressing outrage at the delayed emergency response. Despite last-minute efforts to save vehicles, millions worth of goods were consumed by the inferno.

The full extent of the damage and casualties remains unclear, with Governor Siminalayi Fubara visiting the site early Saturday morning to assess the situation and offer support to affected families.

The deteriorating condition of the Eleme section of the East-West road has been a longstanding concern, with calls for urgent repairs echoing among citizens.
