Rivers State Assembly in chaos as Police intervenes

The unrest persisting in the Rivers State House of Assembly continues, with the police once again taking control of the complex on Tuesday.

Allegedly, members loyal to opposing factions conducted separate sittings at different locations.

Four police patrol vans were stationed at the entrance, restricting movement along the Moscow Road Axis.

An Armoured Personnel Carrier patrolled the area, and armed operatives were strategically positioned.

The reason for heightened security remains unclear, but reports indicate that lawmakers, led by House Speaker Martin Amaewhule, held a session on Tuesday.

The focus was on issues related to the suspension of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria strike, and a call for an investigation into the Assembly’s recent explosion.

Another faction, led by Speaker Edison Ehie, expressed confidence in Governor Siminalayi Fubara during their session.

They commended the governor’s developmental efforts and security initiatives for maintaining peace in the state.

The faction condemned the recent attack on Ehie’s residence and the burning of the House of Assembly.

In a statement, Legislative Aide Ken Uchendu emphasized the need for rehabilitation and urged the governor to initiate the process promptly.

The lawmakers also called on the Inspector General of Police and other security apparatus to investigate the attacks and bring the culprits to justice.
