On Thursday, Nigeria faced yet another setback as its national grid collapsed, plunging the country into darkness.
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the incident via its social media platforms, notifying customers of the outage that occurred around 4:28 pm.
In a statement, the AEDC expressed regret over the situation and assured customers that efforts were underway to rectify the issue and restore normal power supply.
Similarly, the Eko Electricity Distribution Company also issued a statement informing customers of the system collapse and pledged to work diligently with partners for a swift resolution.
This recent collapse comes just weeks after a similar incident reported on February 4. Notably, Nigeria has been grappling with grid instability, as evidenced by the December 12, 2023, collapse, which saw a drastic decline in power generation from 4,032.8MW to 43.5MW the previous day.
The country’s national power grid has faced numerous challenges in recent years, with data from the International Energy Agency revealing 46 collapses between 2017 and 2023.
One notable event cited was the September 14, 2023, blackout caused by a fire on a major transmission line, resulting in widespread disruptions.
As Nigerians continue to endure intermittent power supply and grid failures, stakeholders are under mounting pressure to address the underlying issues and implement sustainable solutions to ensure a reliable electricity supply for the nation.
