US strikes Iran-linked sites in Syria

The US executed two airstrikes in Syria on Sunday against Iran-linked groups, responding to ongoing attacks on American forces. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin stated that President Joe Biden ordered the strikes, targeting a training facility near Albu Kamal and a safe house near Mayadeen.

This marks the third strike since October 26 in the face of persistent attacks on US troops in Syria and Iraq. Iran and its allies attribute responsibility to the US for the Israel-Hamas conflict. Heightening concerns about regional escalation, the US deployed additional forces, including warships and fighter aircraft.

With growing tensions, there is apprehension that the Israel-Hamas conflict could extend across the Middle East, potentially putting isolated US bases at risk. The US, maintaining 900 troops in Syria and 2,500 in Iraq, aims to advise and assist local forces in preventing an Islamic State resurgence. The recent airstrikes prompt a review to determine casualties, underscoring the complex challenges faced by the US in the region.
