UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed has sought Nigeria’s support for the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 16, which focuses on promoting peace and inclusive institutions. During a visit at the UN headquarters in New York, Mohammed emphasized the importance of strengthening institutions for achieving development goals.
She commended Nigeria’s leadership in advocating for an equitable international tax system, highlighted by a historic resolution presented during the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly. The resolution, submitted on behalf of the African Group of States, aimed to establish a universal convention on tax cooperation and prompted annual discussions on global tax issues.
Mohammed acknowledged the pivotal role of Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Amb. Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, in the success of the tax resolution, praising his leadership qualities. She urged Nigeria to align its foreign policy with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and underscored the country’s commitment to achieving SDG Goal 16.
Amb. Adamu Lamuwa expressed gratitude for the discussion and reiterated Nigeria’s dedication to the SDGs, emphasizing its role in advancing Africa’s interests in the UN Security Council and tax policy.
