UK Home Secretary James Cleverly has introduced new rules to control migration, according to BBC reports.
The minimum salary requirement for a skilled worker visa in the UK will be raised from the current £26,000 to £38,700.
Cleverly informed parliament on Monday that if these rules had been in place the previous year, there might have been a decrease of 300,000 migrants annually.
Health and social care visa holders will be exempt from the higher salary threshold, as per BBC reports.
However, care workers from abroad will no longer be allowed to bring their partners and children with them.
This means that if a UK citizen marries a non-UK citizen, their spouse can’t join them in the UK until they earn £38,700.
In 2022, the net migration in the UK, representing the difference between those immigrating and emigrating, totaled 745,000, according to the BBC.
To ensure financial support for dependents, the minimum income for family visas will be raised to the same threshold as the minimum salary for skilled workers, £38,700, Cleverly stated.
