British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has unveiled a £10 million humanitarian aid package for civilians residing in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, in light of the intensifying conflict between Israel and Hamas. Sunak delivered this announcement during a House of Commons statement, reiterating the UK’s denouncement of Hamas’ actions in both Israel and Gaza.
He emphasized the urgent need for humanitarian organizations to gain immediate access to deliver life-saving assistance.
This funding will empower crucial United Nations agencies to supply essential relief materials and services, which may encompass provisions such as food, water, and emergency shelter, tailored to the evolving necessities on the ground.
Sunak expressed his pride in the UK’s enduring role as a significant humanitarian aid provider to the Palestinian people and declared a 33% increase in support with an additional £10 million allocation.
Acknowledging the dire humanitarian crisis unfolding, he stressed the importance of extending support to the Palestinian populace, emphasizing that they too are victims of Hamas’ actions.
In efforts to alleviate the situation, the Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly, have engaged with Israel, Egypt, and other international partners, advocating for the opening of the Rafah crossing to facilitate the entry of urgent humanitarian aid into Gaza.
It was clarified in the statement that all UK aid funding allocated to the Occupied Palestinian Territories undergoes rigorous oversight, with a categorical assurance that no funding reaches Hamas.
