UK considers limiting dependents for foreign care workers, affecting Nigeria & others

The UK is contemplating a reduction in the number of dependants allowed for foreign care workers relocating, with Environment Secretary Steve Barclay indicating that Home Secretary James Cleverly is considering a ban on dependant numbers to reduce figures.

Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick has proposed either banning foreign workers from bringing family members to the UK or allowing them to come with one relative.

This move follows the UK’s announcement of a dependant visa ban for foreign students from January 2024. Barclay expressed support for lowering numbers, particularly for dependants in the care sector, where most foreign care workers, predominantly from Nigeria, India, and Zimbabwe, may be affected.
