Tunde Onakoya holds strong in Chess Marathon, set to break Guinness World Record at 16 hours

Renowned chess maestro Tunde Onakoya embarked on a formidable quest: to shatter the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon, aiming for an impressive 58 hours of relentless gameplay. As the clock ticked, Onakoya’s strategic prowess unfolded, marking 16 intense hours of gameplay where victory became his steadfast companion, vanquishing all challengers.

Set against the backdrop of New York City’s illustrious Times Square, the event commenced on a memorable Wednesday, April 17, with the grand finale slated for April 19. Onakoya, undeterred by the daunting task ahead, dove into the fray, each move calculated, each opponent outmatched.

Among his notable victories was a gripping showdown against New York’s own National Chess Master, Shawn Martinez. A proud proclamation echoed through cyberspace as Onakoya’s triumph resonated: “Tunde Onakoya beats a very worthy opponent and one of New York’s finest, National Chess Master Shawn Martinez!” shared proudly on his X handle in the early hours of Thursday.

Behind the scenes, Onakoya’s stalwart manager, Taiwo, known as “OgaBoxx” in the digital realm, shed light on the arduous challenge. With 15 hours of continuous play under Onakoya’s belt, punctuated by brief intervals totaling 30 minutes as mandated by the rules, the intensity only heightened. Taiwo revealed the intricacies of Onakoya’s dual-fronted battle, wherein he simultaneously engaged in two sets of games, each demanding unwavering focus and flawless execution.

In the first set, Onakoya faced off against the formidable Shawn Martinez, a US National Chess Master, their clash a testament to skill and determination. Meanwhile, in the second set, Onakoya sparred with a rotation of random opponents, showcasing his adaptability and resilience. Crucially, not a single game could be conceded on either front, with the spotlight firmly fixed on Onakoya’s duel against Martinez—a pivotal contest in his pursuit of the record.

As the tension mounted and the clock continued its relentless march, messages of encouragement flooded in from distinguished Nigerian figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Even the US Mission Nigeria and UK in Nigeria added their voices to the chorus of support, rallying behind Onakoya as he etched his name into the annals of chess history.

With every move, Onakoya inched closer to his monumental goal, a testament to perseverance, skill, and unwavering determination. As the world watched with bated breath, his journey towards chess immortality continued, each move a step closer to etching his name in Guinness World Record glory.
