President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of new directors-general for the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and the Department of State Services (DSS).
Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed has been appointed as the new Director-General of the NIA, succeeding Ahmed Abubakar, who resigned from his position on Saturday night. Meanwhile, Mr. Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi has been named the new Director-General of the DSS, replacing Yusuf Bichi, who was appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2018.
This announcement was made by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, in a statement released on Monday in Abuja. Ngelale explained that the appointments were made following the resignation of the previous agency heads.
According to the statement, “President Tinubu has instructed the new security chiefs to collaborate closely in order to reposition the agencies for improved performance, address security challenges, and enhance cooperation with sister agencies and the Office of the National Security Adviser. The President also expressed his gratitude to the outgoing Directors-General for their service to the nation and wished them success in their future endeavors.”
Ambassador Mohammed, the new NIA Director-General, has had a distinguished career in the foreign service since joining the agency in 1995. His experience includes serving in North Korea, Pakistan, Sudan, and at the State House in Abuja, eventually rising to the position of head of the Nigerian Mission to Libya. Mohammed is a 1990 graduate of Bayero University, Kano.
Mr. Adeola Ajayi, the new DSS Director-General, has steadily advanced through the ranks to become an Assistant Director-General. He has served in various capacities, including as State Director in Bauchi, Enugu, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Kogi.
