Tinubu greenlights ₦35,000 minimum wage

President Bola Tinubu has officially given the green light for a ₦35,000 minimum wage for federal civil servants. The announcement came through a circular from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) on Thursday.

The circular, signed by NSIWC Chairman Ekpo U. O, stated that this new wage will be in effect from September 1, 2023. It reads, “I hereby convey the approval of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for the grant of a wage award of N35,000:00 (thirty-five thousand Naira) only per month to all Federal Government workers with effect from 1 September 2023 pending when a new national minimum wage is expected to have been signed into law.”

The circular also specified that treasury-funded federal government ministries, departments, and agencies will draw funding from the treasury for this, while non-treasury funded agencies will use their internally generated funds.
