Tinubu directs swift action on Nigeria’s border security

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a firm directive to the Ministry of Interior to take immediate steps to enhance the security of Nigeria’s borders, as disclosed by Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics on November 28, 2023.

The president’s directive comes in response to the ongoing security challenges facing the nation, with a focus on finding effective and lasting solutions. Minister Tunji-Ojo emphasized the president’s unwavering commitment to securing the borders and highlighted the importance of incorporating modern technology into border control efforts.

According to the minister, the use of technology is crucial in the contemporary context, and the president has explicitly instructed the ministry to deploy technological solutions for border security. Minister Tunji-Ojo stressed the need for a comprehensive approach, considering both human intelligence and advanced technology.

Acknowledging the role of public support, the minister underscored the importance of citizens actively participating in the nation’s security. Drawing parallels with global situations, he emphasized that effective security measures require collaboration and intelligence sharing between the government and the public.

Shifting focus, Minister Tunji-Ojo also provided updates on the modernization of Nigeria’s passport application process. He revealed that the automation of passport applications is now at 99 percent completion and is expected to go live within a week. With this new system, Nigerians will be able to complete most application requirements, including uploading documents and passport photographs, from the comfort of their homes. The only in-person requirement will be fingerprint biometrics at immigration centers.

Moreover, the minister disclosed plans to install e-gate systems at international airports nationwide by February 2024. This initiative aims to streamline the immigration process for Nigerian citizens returning to the country, minimizing the need for direct interactions with immigration officers unless necessary.

In conclusion, President Tinubu’s directive reflects a proactive approach to address Nigeria’s security challenges, utilizing a combination of advanced technology and public involvement. The ongoing automation of passport applications and the upcoming implementation of e-gate systems showcase the government’s commitment to modernizing and securing key aspects of immigration procedures.
