On Thursday, President Bola Tinubu made a significant announcement, designating Mr. Desmond Akawor as the Federal Commissioner representing Rivers State at the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC). This appointment, though pending confirmation by the Senate, fills the vacancy left by the untimely passing of the former RMAFC Federal Commissioner from Rivers State, Asondu Temple, earlier this month.
The news was communicated through a statement titled ‘President Tinubu approves appointment of RMAFC Federal Commissioner,’ issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale. In the statement, it was revealed that Akawor, the President’s choice for this role, comes with a wealth of experience and a commendable track record.
Before stepping into this new role, Akawor had previously served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to South Korea, Minister of State of the Federal Capital Territory, Sole Administrator of the Greater Port Harcourt Development Authority, CEO of the Niger Delta River Basin Development Authority, and Executive Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (Engineering & Technical Services).
President Tinubu, in entrusting Akawor with this crucial position, urged him to leverage his extensive experience across various levels of government. The President emphasized the need for Akawor to contribute to the comprehensive reform of processes, ensuring the efficient and productive utilization of allocations to all three tiers of government in Nigeria. The expectation is that Akawor’s leadership will play a pivotal role in fostering positive changes and improvements within the RMAFC and its crucial responsibilities.
