Tinubu calls for investigation into NPC helicopter crash, offers condolences to families

President Bola Tinubu has expressed his condolences to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Board, its staff, and the families impacted by the recent helicopter crash off the Bonny Finima coast in Port Harcourt.

In a statement released Friday by Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, the President conveyed his “deepest sympathies” to the families of those who perished and affirmed his support for those in mourning.

The statement, titled *President Tinubu Commiserates with the NNPC Board and Families of Victims Onboard the Helicopter in Port Harcourt*, also outlined Tinubu’s directive to intensify search and rescue efforts for any remaining passengers or evidence from the crash of the East Winds Aviation helicopter, registered as 5NBQG.

The helicopter, contracted by NNPC Limited, was transporting contract staff to the FPSO—NUIMS ANTAN facility when it crashed into the Atlantic on Thursday.

To ensure thorough recovery efforts, Tinubu has called on military personnel operating in the region to support the rescue mission in collaboration with the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, and other critical agencies.

The statement emphasized the government’s commitment to uncovering the circumstances surrounding the accident and bringing closure to affected families.

Tinubu expressed his condolences to the bereaved, saying, “I fervently pray that the Almighty God will grant eternal rest to the three departed souls and comfort their families.”

The Rivers State Police Command confirmed the helicopter crash in Bonny on Thursday, noting that two crew members and six passengers were onboard. The police marine division, along with other agencies, has launched a search operation to recover the aircraft and its occupants.

Police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko disclosed that search efforts are underway, while the military, the National Emergency Management Agency, and emergency locators have also joined the mission.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, confirmed the tragic incident in a statement from the ministry’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Odutayo Oluseyi. As of the latest update, no survivors have been reported.
