The recent Supreme Court verdict affirming President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the 2023 presidential election has ignited a political firestorm, with both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party expressing their deep disappointment and determination to continue their respective courses.
In a strongly worded reaction, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, criticized the Supreme Court’s decision, stating, “It is indeed a sad commentary for our democracy that the Supreme Court failed to uphold the provisions of the law.”
He lamented that the court did not address key issues, including the required statutory 25 percent of votes in the FCT and allegations of electoral violations and manipulations by the APC. Ologunagba further expressed the gloomy atmosphere that has descended upon the nation, emphasizing the disappointment felt by many.
The Labour Party, in a separate response, expressed its shock that the Supreme Court’s decision aligned with an earlier judgment despite perceived flaws in the case. National Chairman Julius Abure described the day as a “sad day for democracy” but asserted their determination to move forward.
He stated, “We may be disappointed and dismayed by the outcome of the exercise, but we have chosen to trudge on and to remain optimistic about what the future holds for the nation.” Abure also raised concerns about the state of Nigeria’s institutions and the potential slide toward dictatorship.
Both parties called for vigilance, the defense of democracy, and international support in their quest for a better Nigeria. The political landscape remains tense as the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s ruling reverberates across the nation.
