Yoruba nation advocate, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, commonly known as Sunday Igboho, has urged security agencies to put an end to the recent surge in suspected herdsmen’s attacks on farmers in Iwere-Ile community of Iwajowa Local Government Area and other towns in the Oke Ogun region of Oyo. He also emphasized the need for swift action by the Police and other security forces to address reported conflicts between rogue herdsmen and farmers in parts of Ogun, in order to maintain peace in agricultural communities.
In a press statement personally penned by Adeyemo and shared with the Nigerian Tribune, he called upon the Police, the Department of State Security (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the Nigerian Army to tackle these security challenges before they escalate further. He expressed deep concern over the resurgence of attacks on farmers, emphasizing the hardships already faced in the country.
Adeyemo demanded a thorough investigation into the recent ambush and killing of members of the Amotekun Security Corps, as well as other security agents working to restore order in Iwere-Ile after suspected herdsmen attacked the community.
He praised the efforts of Oyo State Governor, Engineer ‘Seyi Makinde, and his Ogun State counterpart, Prince Dapo Abiodun, in promoting peace and development. Nevertheless, he urged the heads of security agencies to take prompt action.
While advocating for peaceful coexistence regardless of tribal, religious, or political differences, Adeyemo issued a seven-day ultimatum for herdsmen responsible for attacks in any part of the South West to leave the communities. He stressed that while they wouldn’t take matters into their own hands, it was imperative for the herdsmen to vacate.
Adeyemo expressed confidence in the capacity of the Federal Government, led by President Bola Tinubu, to ensure the safety of lives and properties, especially for farmers. He emphasized the importance of preventing any actions that could further escalate food prices. He also appealed to the governors of Oyo and Ogun States to deploy additional security personnel to areas experiencing heightened conflicts between herdsmen and farmers for the sake of peace.
In conclusion, the statement called for increased security presence to enable Nigerians, particularly farmers, to engage in farming activities for increased food production, emphasizing the urgent need to halt these killings for the benefit of all.
