Police take over Mapoly gate, threaten protesters

Men of the police have mounted a truck at the gate of Moshood Abiola polytechnic and are in numbers in order to prevent students protesters.

This comes after the students declared a protest action to kick against increment of school fees.

The aggrieved students fixed the action for this morning but could not go ahead in the face of the armed men’s intimidation.

Ogunwatch had earlier reported the statement made by concerned students of the school who tackled the management for extorting them.

When Ogunwatch contacted the the Dean of Students Affairs, he said that the it was not a police takeover per se. “They were just four police officers with a van” he said.

Speaking about the genesis of the aborted protest, he said ”some infiltrators are trying to sabotage the school’s general exam which was billed to start today”

The dean also confirmed to us that a new fee (registration fee) was levied on the students following the raise of the existing acceptance fee but was to only be paid by new students. For this reason, he said he didn’t see a reason for the protest which was being planned by the students.

To justify the fee hike, the dean disclosed to our correspondent “the last time a lecturer was paid on this campus was June/July and it was payment of arrears.”
