OOU introduces ‘Study and work’ policy, calls for skilled students

The Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), sitting at Ago-Iwoye, Ogun state, has on Thursday call upon students who are skilled in bag making, shoe making, hair-styling, graphics designing and other related crafts to apply for it’s newly introduced “work studies” program.

In an internal memo circulated within the school, Ogunwatch learned that the school plans to partially employ the skilled students who will be entitled to stipends.

The reason for launching the initiative, the management of OOU said, is to ease students of financial constraints, especially to cushion the rate at which students drop out of school for failing to afford school fees.

The memo reads partly “The university management in a bid to ease the financial burden on parents and guardians and to significantly reduce the rate at which students drop out of school due to financial constraints has introduced the Student Work Study Programme.

“The programme will enable students with demonstrable and proven vocational skills to work in the university and earn some stipends and still attend classes.”

“The university management is therefore inviting qualified students in this category to register and signify their interest through the Directorate of Entrepreneurship studies within 2 weeks of the date of this notice”

“It should be known that this is coming as a result of the many complaints by parents and students as regards the inability to continue to pay school fees and fend for their wards.”

last week, the University of Ibadan had proposed to increase the school fees of the students and this was rejected by a group called the Concerned Students Against Tuition Fee (CSATF)

The group having said that education was ordinarily supposed to be free and the position to increase the fees is another way of depriving the children of the poor masses from getting quality education and as such have vowed to resist such tyrannical increase by every civil means at their disposal.
