Newcastle trash PSG on historic night

It was a historic night at St. James Park

It was a night that would not be forgotten anytime soon for the Newcastle faithful at St. James Park and around the globe as the Magpies defeated French giants Paris Saint-Germain 4-1 in their Champions League group of death clash.

Group F favorites PSG had been on top of the table following their 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund on matchday 1 and were looking to make it back-to-back wins. But they could not have expected what was to come.

Newcastle broke the deadlock in the 17th minute with Miguel Almiron pouncing on the rebound of Alexander Isak’s parried shot to fire into the bottom corner.

Dan Burn doubled The Magpies’ lead just before half time, the defender heading home a Bruno Guimaraes cross.

The home side started the second half even better than the first with local boy Sean Longstaff netting their third goal. the Geordie boy firing a low ball under Gianluigi Donnarumma in the PSG goal to send the Newcastle supporters into raptures.

PSG grabbed a goal back in through Lucas Hernandez’s header, their attack was however well muffled by a resilient Newcastle side for majority of the encounter. Kylian Mbappe was largely ineffective as he was constantly booed by the home supporters after rejecting a move to Tyneside in 2020.

Fabian Schar then further rubbed salt into PSG’s wound as he dashed any hope of a nervy ending to the match with a fine finish into the far corner in injury time to seal the result.

Newcastle, interestingly, now top the famous “group of death” and would have renewed hope and belief that they can make it into the knockout stages of the competition.
