LP Crisis: Protests erupt in Abuja over Abure

Tensions flared when members of the Edo State Chapter of the Labour Party gathered at the party’s headquarters, demanding that the National Working Committee ratify their decision to suspend Julius Abure as the National Chairman. This protest was met by a counter-group supporting Abure, leading to a near-clash that was prevented by security forces.

Despite facing some resistance, the anti-Abure protesters managed to push through barriers, though no national officials were present to address them. Following their demonstration at the party headquarters, they moved to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deliver a letter from the Edo State Executive Council, urging action on the party leadership issue.

This conflict stems from a recent decision by the ward executive of Ward 3, Arue, Utomi, in the Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State, who suspended Abure last week. However, the national leadership of the Labour Party declared this suspension illegal and unconstitutional, arguing that the Edo State executives lacked the authority to take such action according to the party’s constitution.
