Imo government accuses LP, PDP electoral loss on internal wrangling

On Sunday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially announced Hope Uzodimma, the incumbent and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the victor in the November 11 gubernatorial election. Uzodimma secured 540,308 votes, outperforming his closest competitors—Samuel Anyanwu of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 71,503 votes, and Athan Achonu of the Labour Party (LP), who received 64,081 votes.

Expressing surprise, Uzodimma remarked on the unexpected competition from rival camps despite internal conflicts. He noted that the APC had remained united, unlike other parties that grappled with factionalism, defections, and internal challenges in the lead-up to the election. Uzodimma emphasized that the APC’s cohesion contributed to its electoral success, while other parties, plagued by internal issues and mass defections, struggled to perform as well.

Addressing the recent protest organized by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), the commissioner highlighted that Governor Uzodimma had been resoundingly re-elected for a second term by the people of Imo State, regardless of the demonstrations. He also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission for its effective management of the election, underscoring that despite initial concerns, the electoral process was generally deemed peaceful.
