The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a man, Olubunmi Johnson, on suspicion of setting his wife, Kikelomo, on fire at their residence on Fagbuyi Street, Ilogbo, in the Ota area of Ogun State.
According to an eyewitness account, the incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Friday following a domestic dispute. Although the exact details surrounding the altercation remain unclear, the state police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed that Johnson has been taken into custody in connection with the incident.
A neighbor who witnessed the event reportedly contacted the victim’s family, who then alerted the police, leading to an investigation into what authorities are treating as an attempted murder.
Odutola stated that officers from the Ilogbo Division acted swiftly, resulting in the arrest of the 55-year-old suspect.
“The husband poured petrol on his wife and ignited it with a match. Witnesses at the scene rushed her to the hospital,” Odutola confirmed. “Following the report, our detectives promptly detained the husband, who remains in custody.”
This case follows a similar incident in October 2024 when a 30-year-old man, Motunrayo Olaniyi, allegedly stabbed his newlywed wife, Olajumoke, multiple times during an argument and then set their room on fire at Amazing Grace Estate, Elepe, in Ikorodu, Lagos State. The Lagos State Police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that Olaniyi locked his injured wife inside the room, leading to her tragic death.
