Govt allocates N138M to fight fake news

The Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, under the 2024 Appropriation Bill, plans to allocate N138,066,187 to combat fake news, print calendars, and support media engagements.

Former Minister Lai Mohammed initiated the anti-fake news advocacy in 2021, addressing the rise of “deep” fake news targeting the government.

The budget breakdown includes N24.5m for an enlightenment campaign, N40m for calendar production, N30m for external publicity, N20.7m for media interactions, and N21.7m for social media platform development.

President Bola Tinubu submitted the budget to the National Assembly last week.
