Manchester United’s captain, Bruno Fernandes, has issued a public apology for the team’s humiliating 3-0 defeat against Bournemouth, acknowledging a lack of effort and quality in their performance. This unexpected loss, the first-ever at home to Bournemouth, prompted boos from disappointed fans.
Erik ten Hag, under increasing pressure, expressed doubts about the squad’s consistent quality at the highest level after the match. Fernandes, assuming responsibility for the poor display, stated, “I want to apologize for the performance. It was not acceptable, starting with me.”
The Portuguese star emphasized that the team collectively agrees on the subpar nature of their performance, highlighting deficiencies in quality, effort, and aggression compared to their previous game against Chelsea. United’s inconsistency, with 11 losses in 23 matches this season, remains a perplexing issue for Fernandes.
Reflecting on the team’s erratic form, Fernandes told MUTV, “When we win a game, the next one, we don’t perform in the same way we did before. I don’t know if it’s like a lack of concentration or focus or something else, but it’s something that we have to be aware of.”
With little time to rectify their issues, United faces a crucial Champions League clash against Bayern Munich, needing a win and a specific outcome in the Copenhagen vs. Galatasaray match to progress. This is followed by a challenging Premier League encounter against rivals Liverpool, a match Fernandes will miss due to accumulating five bookings this season.
Acknowledging the upcoming challenges, Fernandes expressed confidence in the team’s ability to secure positive results, stating, “We are capable, more than able, to get the result.”
