Last November, Italian authorities requested that Brazilian officials facilitate the imprisonment of the former Real Madrid, AC Milan, and Manchester City star in his homeland, as his extradition was deemed legally unfeasible.
On Tuesday, Brazilian public prosecutors advocated for the footballer’s imprisonment in Brazil, citing compliance with national legislation and the demonstration of the country’s commitment to combating crime and fostering judicial cooperation.
Despite the conviction of Robinho in 2017 for sexual assault in a Milan nightclub and his unsuccessful appeals against the nine-year sentence, the prospect of serving prison time in Italy has been dismissed.
Brazil, in line with its policy, does not extradite its citizens sentenced abroad. Reports suggest that Brazil’s Public Prosecutor’s Office warned the High Court of Justice that ignoring the Italian request could allow Robinho to evade legal consequences.

The former footballer, part of a group convicted of sexually assaulting a woman in Milan in 2013, has faced challenges since the news emerged in November 2017. Despite his return to boyhood club Santos in October 2020, his contract was terminated a week later following a sponsorship fallout due to his Italian rape conviction. Robinho’s decision to suspend his contract was announced on Instagram, expressing a desire to focus on personal matters.
Since then, he has made sporadic updates on social media, extending New Year wishes to his followers. Robinho’s lawyers have maintained that the encounters in question were consensual. As Brazil’s Public Prosecutor’s Office supports the possibility of the footballer serving time in his home country, his legal team is yet to comment on this development.
