The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, has died at the age of 56, following a period of illness. His passing was confirmed on Wednesday by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, through an official statement titled, “Announcement of the Passing of Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja.”
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed his condolences to Lagbaja’s family and the Nigerian Armed Forces, recognizing the late general’s “significant contributions to the nation” and wishing him eternal peace.
Lagbaja, who was appointed Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023, by President Tinubu, was known for his dedication and leadership within the Nigerian Army. Throughout his career, he held critical roles in military operations aimed at stabilizing regions across the country. His operational contributions included service in Operation ZAKI in Benue State, Lafiya Dole in Borno, Udoka in Southeast Nigeria, and Operation Forest Sanity across Kaduna and Niger States.
An alumnus of the prestigious U.S. Army War College, Lt. General Lagbaja began his military journey as a platoon commander with the 93 Battalion and later served with the 72 Special Forces Battalion. His legacy is further honored by his wife, Mariya, and their two children.
In light of Lagbaja’s indisposition over recent weeks, President Tinubu appointed Olufemi Oluyede as the acting Chief of Army Staff last Wednesday. The President officially decorated Oluyede as Lieutenant General on Tuesday, underscoring his “commitment and service to the Nigerian military.”
The President praised Oluyede for his dedication to ensuring the country’s safety and stability, describing the appointment as both an honor and a privilege.
